Centrosome inheritance: A central ‘in-egg-ma’ solved?

چکیده
The mechanism of centrosome inheritance during parthenogenetic development has long been an outstanding mystery of cell biology. New observations of centrosome inheritance in hymenopterans have provided our first direct insights into this enigmatic process.

Identification of a Polo-like Kinase 4-Dependent Pathway for De Novo Centriole Formation
Supernumerary centrosomes are a key cause of genomic instability in cancer cells. New centrioles can be generated by duplication with a mother centriole as a platform or, in the absence of preexisting centrioles, by formation de novo. Polo-like kinase 4 (Plk4) regulates both modes of centriole biogenesis, and Plk4 deregulation has been linked to tumor development. We show that Plx4, the Xenopus...
متن کاملRole of delayed nuclear envelope breakdown and mitosis in Wolbachia-induced cytoplasmic incompatibility.
The bacterium Wolbachia manipulates reproduction in millions of insects worldwide; the most common effect is cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI). We found that CI resulted from delayed nuclear envelope breakdown of the male pronucleus in Nasonia vitripennis. This caused asynchrony between the male and female pronuclei and, ultimately, loss of paternal chromosomes at the first mitosis. When Wolbach...
متن کاملReciprocal inheritance of centrosomes in the parthenogenetic Hymenopteran Nasonia vitripennis
BACKGROUND In the majority of animals, the centrosome-the microtubule-organizing center of the cell-is assembled from components of both the sperm and the egg. How the males of the insect order Hymenoptera acquire centrosomes is a mystery, as they originate from virgin birth. RESULTS To address this issue, we observed centrosome, spindle and nuclear behavior in real time during early developm...
متن کاملFrom meiosis to mitosis - the sperm centrosome defines the kinetics of spindle assembly after fertilization in Xenopus.
Bipolar spindle assembly in the vertebrate oocyte relies on a self-organization chromosome-dependent pathway. Upon fertilization, the male gamete provides a centrosome, and the first and subsequent embryonic divisions occur in the presence of duplicated centrosomes that act as dominant microtubule organizing centres (MTOCs). The transition from meiosis to embryonic mitosis involves a necessary ...
متن کاملExpression of the novel maternal centrosome assembly factor Wdr8 is required for vertebrate embryonic mitoses
The assembly of the first centrosome occurs upon fertilisation when male centrioles recruit pericentriolar material (PCM) from the egg cytoplasm. The mechanisms underlying the proper assembly of centrosomes during early embryogenesis remain obscure. We identify Wdr8 as a novel maternally essential protein that is required for centrosome assembly during embryonic mitoses of medaka (Oryzias latip...
